it’s about a 15 by 5 area that I’ll be planting in and I don’t have a tiller. Which mean’s it’s all going to be done by hand. Should I just dig big holes where I’m going to be planting stuff or do all of? I’m also going to have a little pathway going through the middle of it so the power guys can read the meter box. Thanks so much.
I’m going to be planting tomatoes, cucumbers, tons of marigolds, bell peppers (if they ever grow), and some herbs.
The tomato plants and the cucumber’s will be going up a trellis type thing, so they take up less room on the ground.

What gardening tools will I need?
Assume that I know nothing…
If I am creating flower/shrub beds in a new yard what tools will I need to buy to plant and maintain them? (A roto-tiller to begin – got it!) If you want to share any advice or tips, please do!
Please include any “optional” tools that you have found helpful!
I have 1/4 of an acre, what size rototiller do I need?
We have to reseed our backyard (about 1/4 an acre). We need to till the backyard, what size tiller do we need to get to get the yard done in a day?
Need to level 24′x24′ area of sloping ground for playset?
Ground slopes about 3′ from one side to other. Shoud I hire a Landscape contractor with Bobcat or rent a rear tine tiller and do myself? I’m in Kentucky and we have lots of clay in very hard soil. I don’t want to add fill fill dirt and disrupt my drainage. I am going to place 9″ of #12 gravel under playset and 6′ around perimeter after I level the base. Anyone have experience with this or have a ballpark what a Bobcat operator would charge?
what does a rototiller d?….everyone says i need one for the backyard….?
i feel foolish to ask what it does …so i just play it off..lol…
where do i get one of these…can i rent one????how much do they cost?
Do I need a motorized tiller or one used by hand?
I’m not even sure if I’m using the right terms for all of this, because I’m a gardening virgin. Honestly, I hate the thought of gardening and yard stuff but my boyfriend and I really need to do something with the weed-infested little patches of “garden” scattered around his front yard and by the walk way. There are some straggly shrubs and really tough-looking weeds that we want to pull up, we’re basically tearing everything out of the ground so that we can spray some GroundClear and put in rocks or something equally low maintenance.
I’m not sure of the best way to clear these areas, how do you pull a shrub out of the ground? They’re not very big, maybe thigh height but they’re out of control and the weeds are all over the place. It doesn’t look like a big enough area to me to warrant an expensive motorized tiller, but would we be wasting our time & effort trying to use a manual one?
Are there places that rent these things out? I refuse to buy one because we’ll never use it after we get this stuff out of here, we only need it for a day!
P.S. I really don’t hate all things green, lol. I love plant life in the wild, I just know that I procrastinate too much to take care of it at home, I’d rather stick to grass & gravel.
Need the advice of a real boat mechanic…?
I’m working on a 1999 Mercury 25HP outboard tiller handle. Here are the symptoms… When cold It starts right up – it runs smooth, and runs strong. Then it dies and is very difficul to start again. You have to let it sit a couple of minutes. Then it starts, runs smooth, but dies right away. I rebuilt the carb and the fuel pump. I replaced the gas tank and fuel line with primer bulb so the fuel is fresh and clean. It has new spark plugs. Any ideas?
I’m working on a 1999 Mercury 25HP 2 stroke outboard tiller handle. Here are the symptoms… When cold It starts right up – it runs smooth, and runs strong. Then after about a minute it dies and is very difficul to start again. You have to let it sit a couple of minutes. Then it starts, runs smooth, but dies right away. It is not flooded at this point. I rebuilt the carb and the fuel pump thinking it was fuel related. (Did not notice anything unusual other than the idle screw was adjusted a little on the lean side, and the plugs were gapped incorrectly. I replaced the gas tank and fuel line and primer bulb and cleaned out the fuel filter so the fuel is fresh and clean. It has new spark plugs (gapped correctly). Its as if something electrical is working flawless when cold then heats up quickly and fails , but i’m not sure where to start with electrical checks. Connections are tight and corrosion free. Any ideas?
It does kind of slow down and then die rather than just immediately stop running. Before i rebuilt the fuel pump i noticed that the fuel line bulb was soft at the point of failure like the pump could not keep up, but the fuel pump rebuild corrected that.
More information: I inspected the two fuel line hoses (from the fuel inlet to the filter, and from the filter to the carb) and they do not appear dry cracked or damaged in any way. I don’t mind replacing them as preventive maintenance. Of course i did have to remove the fuel line to the carb when i rebuilt it and noticed that the tube from the carb makes a very snug connection with the fuel hose; and that eased my concerns some that only a glorified ty wrap is used to make the connection – something the book calls a ’stay strap’. Could these be allowing air into the system? And is there any problems with using a standard small mechanical hose clamp at these connections?
Also, there appears to be no antisiphoning valve external to the motor other than that in the primer bulb, but the bulb/fuel line assembly is new. What about the quick disconnects at the tank and the fuel inlet to the motor? Can these be defective? There are no gas leaks.
What do I need to do before I plant my garden?
My soil has a lot of clay in it. I used a rototiller but now what should I do? Is there something I should blend into the dirt? What about fertilizers? Maybe natural instead of all chemicals. The garden area is not that big, about ten ft by 12 ft. Also I have been having problems with moles in my yard. Any suggestions for that? Thank You!!
